  • Scientific Name: Rosa Sinensis
  • Also Known As: Hibiscus
  • Hibiscus is large and trumpet-shaped, with five or more petals. It is an exotic and gorgeous flower that has symbolical meaning as well. It blooms only for a short period of time so it is considered a symbol of delicate beauty.
  • Uses: The flowers of hibiscus are edible and are used in salads in the Pacific Island. Parts of the flower are used to make a popular drink in Egypt called Karkade. Various parts of the plant are also used to make jams, spices, soups, and sauces. Hibiscus is also used for treating loss of appetite, colds, heart and nerve diseases, upper respiratory tract pain and swelling (inflammation), fluid retention, stomach irritation, and disorders of circulation; for dissolving phlegm; as a gentle laxative; and as a diuretic to increase urine output.
  • When someone gives you a hibiscus, it can also suggest “Seize the opportunity” ( represented by the hibiscus’ full bloom which can end anytime). The hibiscus flower is also Malaysia national flower to symbolise courage and unity of its people. May we achieve the same post GE 2015.
