We finally visited the super popular Gudatema Cafe over the weekend for my birthday dinner. We waited for an hour in the queue, as expected. Now, the question is - was it worth the wait?
What better way to celebrate my birthday than going for dinner in my pajamas since the theme for the cafe is 'NUA' (hokkien for bum, slacker, lazy).
I have not been to any of the theme restaurants (Pokemon, Hello Kitty, Pompompurin, Snoopy...) but I wasn't expecting food to be so average, given that the character is licensed from Japan and the price tag is so hefty.
The cafe decor and food presentation was A* but not so for the food.
Food presentation & styling: 10/10
Taste: 4/10
Eggcited Cajun Chicken with Waffles (S$23.90) - Best main course out of all. Juicy chicken and tasty waffle.
Shoyu “Ramen” Set ($21.50) – No offence to the very talented blogger who created this dessert, we feel this taste really, really strange. The chestnut Mont Blanc and earl grey jelly do not go well at all.
Left to Right:
Lazy Surfer ($28.50) - Another dish served cold. I don't recommend this to anyone, the Gudetama-shaped Brazilian rice was really cold and taste like a bad attempt on the classic basmati rice. There was way too much tumeric and cumin. The seafood was not fresh and chewy.
Eggcited Cajun Chicken with Waffles (S$23.90)
Gude Pudding (S$16.90) - This vanilla caramel flan is the best of all the items we had.
Gudetama Lobster Onsen ($16) - we didn't like this at all. It is too salty and cold when served. Didn't these guys own SOUP SPOON too? Why are the standards so different?
This localised Gudatema can be seen holding cute mint leaves in the cafe. I guess to represent our tropical city or he really loves mojito, like me. They should probably come up with a dish (or a drink) with mint leaves too.
I think it is still worth to visit at least once for the super cute decor, if you don't mind the long queue. But if you are a foodie, you will probably be disappointed by the food.
