Let's Talk About These Oily But So Delicious Chwee Kueh

Friday, December 04, 2015

Been a while since I did my mini local food photography..hehe... Today's menu: Chwee Kueh !

So what's Chwee Kueh (Water Rice Cake)?
They are steamed rice cakes that are very popular in Singapore and Malaysia. The white portion is rice flour mixed with water and the brown portion is diced preserved radish (chye poh). They don't look appealing but they are so delicious - best served with chilli sauce. The radish is the 'make or break' factor for Chwee Kueh. You can make great rice cakes but if you have crappy chye poh, it just taste awful.

And we are very lucky to stay in the Eastern part of Singapore that has one of the best Chwee Kueh in Singapore. This stall is so famous that you need to queue EVERYDAY - anytime of the day. There are just endless people at the stall waiting patiently to get a slice of the savoury rice cake. And incase you are wondering, they are really cheap, you can get 4 pieces for S$2. i.e you need to sell many, many, many Chwee Kueh to cover your costs and resources. There must be enough business for them to sustain this for so many years (10++).

The downside to Chwee Kueh is that it is so freaking oily, you can only have them once in a while. Just look at the photos below. :)
